It’s no secret that small-town America has had a rough go of it over the past few decades. The growing allure of cosmopolitan life has continually drawn more and more people out of tiny towns and into big cities.
This slow exodus has left entire villages in its wake. Most of these places remain hidden, but when people accidentally find themselves roaming around one of these abandoned towns, the footage they capture is surreal.
A few years ago, one intrepid Redditor came across this giant old house on an abandoned prairie in the Midwest.
Spooky, right?
According to the Redditor, this house was located about an hour’s drive from his hometown.
Once he learned of its existence, he had to check it out.
It’s like someone just got up and left everything behind.
They didn’t even bother to unmake the beds.
I’m sure this old stove would fetch a pretty penny at auction.
After exploring the first floor, he wandered upstairs.
Even after decades, the original wallpaper retained some color.
I really hope that’s just water damage on the walls and not something more sinister.
That’s one cluttered hallway.
This is what used to be someone’s bedroom.
The view from the top of the steps is more than a little unsettling.
Welcome to the world’s creepiest attic.

Looking at these photos, it makes me wonder what happened to the people who used to live in that house. It’s clear that they put a lot of time and effort into building and maintaining their home. What happened between then and now for it to end up like this?
