Technology dominates our lives. It’s a ubiquitous part of society, and a lot of people couldn’t imagine living without it. Our cell phones now have more capabilities than some of the most sophisticated pieces of machinery from 30 years ago. It’s quite impressive.
But some people find that these technological advancements are limiting. We’ve begun to lose our ability to connect with people and appreciate the little things. Our attention spans are shorter than ever, and most people place the blame on technology. Some people would just love to get away from it all.
If you are wondering what getting away from it all would look like, this woman is about to show you. She visits her family every year on a remote island where technology is scarce.
This woman comes from an island called Rendova, which is a part of the Solomon Islands. It’s a secluded area of the world near Papua New Guinea. Her family lives in a part of the rain forest that’s far away from the main village.

As you can see, it’s pretty isolated.
She and her cousins wash their clothes in a nearby river. The river is clean and filled with fresh water that allows them to drink, bathe, and even play.
Her family catches fish with a simple net so that they have fresh food for dinner every night.
Her cousin Gabriel is the cook. Here he is preparing a chicken for their Christmas dinner.
This is the pig that her family bought in the capital city. They had to have it brought to them on a ship.
Cutting firewood is an essential part of life, since they use fire to cook every day.
Pots and pans are used to cook, and they can only be purchased from the capital city.
This is the kitchen table that everyone eats around. It’s small and cramped, but they make it work. For breakfast, they usually eat biscuits and drink tea.
This is their Christmas celebratory feast. After a long day of cooking and preparing it, it is finally ready to be enjoyed.
Fishing is a large part of their culture.
And this is the view from the main village on the island. It’s isolated and definitely devoid of technology.

This is what life would look like if we didn’t have technology to continually distract us. You make your own choice about how awesome or terrifying it looks. There is really no correct, standard way to live your life, but it is definitely interesting to see how the other side of the world lives.
