Over the past eight years, the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska, has experienced significant retreat and deflation. Once a large tourist attraction, the glacier is now a shadow of its former self, and it sits directly across from the spot where Extreme Ice Survey installed cameras to monitor it.
The time-lapse video that they captured is almost too incredible to believe. Since this team began filming, they’ve recorded enough footage to prove that the mass has shrunken significantly. It’s incredibly humbling.
Founded in 2007 by James Balog, Extreme Ice Survey’s goal is to create a “visual voice” for the planet’s changing ecosystems. If you take anything away from watching this video, it should be that the world is truly changing — and it’s changing fast.
