Modern Trains Are Pretty Safe…Unless It’s Windy

We’ve already talked about how dangerous train travel was back in the day, but even our modern railways have their fair share of catastrophes.

In Lufkin, Texas, an idle train was waiting for service when heavy winds blew it off of a bridge. Thankfully, no one was on the train at the time.

Early one morning in Luftkin, Texas, the wind became so powerful that it blew down street signs, power lines, trees, and even a whole train.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the process.

In total, 64 cars were thrown off the tracks that day. It will probably take two full days to get everything back in order.

It’s crazy to think that even with the nation’s top engineers working on designing these things, a gust of wind can topple one over. It really makes you think about what nature is capable of.
