The idea of monkey waiters may sound like something from a Richie Rich cartoon, but as it turns out, they’re real.
The Kayabukiya Tavern in Utsunomiya, Japan, employed two actual monkeys by the names of Yat-chan and Fuku-chan to work as servers. As cute as that sounds, the owner also made them wear horribly creepy human masks that could ruin anyone’s appetite.
Unfortunately, the tavern was abandoned after the tsunami in 2011, but the monkeys are currently living with the restaurant’s former owner…who one day hopes to reopen the bizarre establishment.
